Franz Erhard Walther
In a museum such as ours, it can be immensely gratifying when exhibitions make do with works drawn entirely from one's own collection, especially when they are not bound by a particular thematic aspect but offer a full spectrum of a single artist's oeuvre. This is the case with our Franz Erhard Walther exhibition. Thanks to acquisitions that were as far-sighted as they were discriminating, and to numerous donations, the Hamburger Kunsthalle can boast an extensive range of his early works, the like of which in terms of abundance and quality cannot be found in any collection.

Franz Erhard WaltherDrawing was a natural part of my life from early childhood onwards. I could produce a realistic image of anything I wanted to draw. The subject matter never presented any difficulties, which gave ma a sense of confidence in my abilities, but also meant that I had an unusual perspective on my surroundings. To me, there was nothing special about any of this. I did not just draw things as they were, however. When I was about eight years old, for example, I began drawing groups of people I envisaged in a cold environment with no clothes on. After sketching their outline, I would dress them with one hatched article of clothing at a time, and in doing so I imagined their bodies gradually warming up. I also drew series of images on narrow rolls of paper, which I would then unroll like a film inside a cardboard box with a cutout frame. As I presented these to an audience of invited friends, I would narrate the story I had drawn. I also recorded these picture stores in my notebooks as a succession of images with drawn frames, and at some point I began creating cartoons. Drawing things I observed in reality soon became uninteresting and boring.
